The construction of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the work of the master Felipe de Ureña, began in 1767 and was completed 20 years later. It is a building that has undergone multiple transformations in its structure. The façade is of an exuberant baroque style, characteristic of the Bajío consecrated by its filigree stonework. The enormous dome is covered on the outside with Talavera tiles, also called handkerchief tiles.

In 1924, the contest to choose the Queen of the Fair was held for the first time, and Miss Paz Romo de Vivar was chosen as queen.
