The Bacalar Lagoon, also known as the 7-color lagoon due to the different shades of blue reflected in its waters, is located 30 minutes from the capital and has a beautiful cenote called Cenote Azul, which is approximately 90 meters deep.
The Municipality of Bacalar is one of the 10 municipalities that make up the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was created by decree of the Congress of Quintana Roo on February 2, 2011, segregating its territory from the municipality of Othón P. Blanco. Its capital is the city of Bacalar.
In February, the town celebrates its carnival with a dance party and all kinds of regional costumes and music. Its Patronal Festival in honor of San Joaquín takes place in August with religious events, boat races and jet skis in the beautiful lagoon.
