The temple of San Joaquin in Bacarl was built in the 18th century in colonial style and was recently restored. The image of its patron saint is considered miraculous, which is why its celebrations in August are very colorful.
The Municipality of Bacalar is one of the 10 municipalities that make up the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was created by decree of the Congress of Quintana Roo on February 2, 2011, segregating its territory from the municipality of Othón P. Blanco. Its capital is the city of Bacalar.
In February, the town celebrates its carnival with a dance party and all kinds of regional costumes and music. Its Patronal Festival in honor of San Joaquín takes place in August with religious events, boat races and jet skis in the beautiful lagoon.
