Located in Punta Sur, the southern tip of the island of Cozumel, is the Tomb of the Snail, an archaeological vestige dedicated to Ixchel, a deity of the Mayan culture. This structure, built by the Mayans in the post-classical period, is equipped with a dome that was in turn covered with sea snails that produced a humming sound in strong winds. The whole structure functioned as a kind of alarm, warning of the intensity of the winds on the island.
