The municipality of El Carmen Tequexquitla was an old hacienda that became the municipal capital over time. They lived off the exploitation of tequexquite, and later they began to exploit sand mines. Located 13 km east of Cuapiaxtla and 74 km from the capital, this town is known for the construction of houses made of various materials such as rye straw and wheat, among others.
El Carmen Tequexquitla is one of the 60 municipalities that make up the Mexican state of Tlaxcala, it is located in the east of the state and approximately 63 kilometers east of the city of Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl, its name means "Place of Tequezquite or Tequezquital" , it has beautiful architectural places such as the Temple of the Virgin of El Carmen of popular architectural style and the application of contrasting colors dating from the 19th century, the Temple of the Company built in the 19th century, as well as places of tourist recreation such as Laguna de Totolcingo or the visit to El Carmen Tequexquitla.
On July 16, the town's patron saint, the Virgin of Carmen, is celebrated. On July 15, to dawn on the 16th, a large procession takes place with dances, carpets of fruit and seeds, as well as carpets of sawdust and flowers. The end of the fair takes place on the Sunday after July 16, if it falls on a weekday. Fighting bulls are released in the center of the town, an event known as the Huamantla-style bull run.
