Festivities

From August 1st to August 15th of each year, the Huamantla fair is celebrated in honor of the Virgin of Charity. The celebration begins on August 1st. Daily masses are held at 8 a.m. and rosaries at 6 p.m., and pilgrims from the neighborhoods and colonies of Huamantla, towns in Tlaxcala and other states are received. On July 31st, the first flower carpet is made in the Basilica of Charity, fireworks are set off and there is a serenade. From August 1st to 15th, sawdust and flower carpets are made daily in the atrium of the Church of Charity. They begin at 7 p.m. and finish the carpet between 4 and 5 a.m. Before and after making the carpet, there is a fireworks display. Sometimes the carpets are made up to the 22nd, which is the Octave of the Virgin. August 14 is the main day and "it is known as the night that nobody sleeps."
