The Temple of San Mateo dates back to the 19th century. It has a Latin cross floor plan and a two-part façade. The first has a semicircular stone arch as an entrance, flanked by pillars and intercolumniations with sacred sculptures. In the upper part there is a choir window and a cornice with panels that extends throughout the building and above it a cross. The façade is mainly beige with vivid ochre and gold tones.

Municipality

Tepetitla de Lardizábal is a municipality in the state of Tlaxcala. The name of the municipality comes from the Nahuatl word tepetitlan which means place "between hills". It has beautiful historical buildings such as the Temple of San Mateo dating from the 19th century, the Temple of San Salvador dates from the 19th and 20th centuries, the former haciendas of San Juan de los Molinos date from the 18th century and that of San Carlos which dates from the 19th century. The main festival takes place on September 21, dedicated to Mr. San Mateo, the patron saint of the place.

Festivities

The main festival is held on September 21st, dedicated to San Mateo, the town's patron saint. If the date falls on a weekday, it is celebrated on the following Sunday, but if it falls on a Monday or Tuesday, it is celebrated on the previous Sunday. On Sunday, the main day, it begins at 4 in the morning, and "Las Mañanitas" is sung to the patron saint in the temple, sung by the parishioners, who are accompanied by guitar music. A salvo of rockets is launched and bells are rung. At noon, the festive mass is celebrated. During the day, the band plays in the temple's atrium or in the portal next to the main square. At night, at 9 pm, fireworks are lit in the center. On one side of the main square, mechanical games, target shooting, raffles, stands selling Mexican snacks, fruit, toys, candy, and traditional party bread are set up.
