The Cathedral of La Paz is the seat of the Diocese of La Paz. It is located in the center of the city of La Paz, Baja California Sur. It is located on the site of the mission founded by the Jesuits in the 18th century. With a sober neoclassical style on the outside, it has a simple façade and two towers, which resemble those of North American temples.
La Paz is one of the 5 municipalities of the state of Baja California Sur. In 1596, Admiral Sebastián Vizcaíno named the city that is today the capital of the state of Baja California Sur as La Paz. In 1683, the Spanish conquistadors arrived at the bay and named it Puerto de Nuestra Señora de la Paz. This name was reaffirmed in 1720 when the Jesuit priests Juan de Ugarte and Jaime Bravo founded the Mission of La Paz. The name La Paz is derived from all of this.
Civic commemorations of a national and regional nature are celebrated; in addition, on May 13, fairs and other activities are held to commemorate the founding of the city of La Paz, and on January 24, the Day of Our Lady of La Paz, the patron saint of the place, is celebrated. Regarding traditional dances, in San Antonio, the Suegra and the Cuera are danced, as well as the children's round, the Viudita.
