In the municipality of La Paz you can see whales between 12 and 16 meters long appearing above the surface of the sea in Magdalena Bay, 270 kilometers from the city. This activity is only possible between February 15 and March 15, the season for sighting these wonderful creatures.
La Paz is one of the 5 municipalities of the state of Baja California Sur. In 1596, Admiral Sebastián Vizcaíno named the city that is today the capital of the state of Baja California Sur as La Paz. In 1683, the Spanish conquistadors arrived at the bay and named it Puerto de Nuestra Señora de la Paz. This name was reaffirmed in 1720 when the Jesuit priests Juan de Ugarte and Jaime Bravo founded the Mission of La Paz. The name La Paz is derived from all of this.
