Between 1753 and 1766, when a complete renovation and rebuilding of the convent was undertaken on the initiative of Bishop Moctezuma, some work must have also been carried out on the temple, since the date 1764 is inscribed on the doorway of the transept. It is believed that the Capilla del Carmen was built at that time, part of the old convent complex of La Encarnación. All that remains today is the temple with a double doorway, the tower and the cloister that now forms part of the Centro Cultural del Carmen.
