The Calvary Church of Chiapa de Corzo was built at the end of the viceroyalty and is of popular manufacture. Inside it preserves an important polychrome altarpiece, which represents the descent of Christ from the Cross. Its style dates from the end of the 16th century and beginning of the 17th century, and probably belonged to the Dominican convent of the city. This altarpiece is one of the best examples of Mexican Renaissance art.
