The Palenque Archaeological Zone is one of the most interesting archaeological cities in Mexico. To visit it is to discover the soul of the Mayan world; to understand myths, rituals, beliefs and to admire the majestic architecture of our ancestors. The pre-Hispanic city and the Palenque National Park were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987 as one of the main Mayan sites that influenced other settlements in the Usumacinta River basin. More than 200 architectural structures and buildings are built on an area of 16 kilometers.
Palenque, in Spanish means a place surrounded by a wooden fence or stake, is one of the municipalities of the State of Chiapas in Mexico, the municipality borders other places and the municipality located in the northern area is Catazajá, to the east is La Libertad, the state of Tabasco and the Republic of Guatemala, it has emblematic places for tourism such as archaeological sites and its diverse cultural and eco-tourism options.
In Palenque the most important celebrations are the fair dedicated to Saint Dominic of Guzmán and Saint Francis of Assisi.
