The town of San Juan Chamula is a Tzotzil community, 10 kilometers from San Cristóbal de las Casas, of pre-Hispanic origin that exercises its authority based on its customs and traditions. San Juan Bautista, San Pedro, and San Sebastián are the three neighborhoods that make up this ceremonial center, each with its own pantheon presided over by gigantic crosses that represent Chul Metic (Mother God) and Chul Totic (Father God). This is where the seat of authority is located and where religious syncretism finds its maximum expression.
The municipality of Chamula is one of the municipalities into which the Mexican state of Chiapas is divided for its internal regime. Its capital is the town of San Juan Chamula. The name Chamula means thick water, like adobe. The main tourist attractions are San Juan Chamula, the Church of San Juan Bautista, the Carnival Festival, the Chamula Ethnographic Museum, the Tzontehuitz hill and the Petej lagoon.
In Chamula, the festivals of San Sebastián, San Juan Bautista, Santa Rosa, San Mateo and the Virgen del Rosario are celebrated.
