The traditional Chamulite doll, made of cloth and imitating on a small scale the traditional clothing of Mayan men and women in the area, has taken on the appearance of the followers of Marcos or Zapatistas and has exchanged the multicoloured skirts and stoles for a black balaclava and rifle.

Municipality

The municipality of Chamula is one of the municipalities into which the Mexican state of Chiapas is divided for its internal regime. Its capital is the town of San Juan Chamula. The name Chamula means thick water, like adobe. The main tourist attractions are San Juan Chamula, the Church of San Juan Bautista, the Carnival Festival, the Chamula Ethnographic Museum, the Tzontehuitz hill and the Petej lagoon.
