Legend has it that thanks to his intervention, the martyr Caralampio saved the town of Comitán de Domínguez from the ravages of a smallpox and cholera epidemic that occurred in the mid-19th century. Its inhabitants built this church in gratitude. San Caralampio was a martyr who was executed by Roman soldiers during the persecution of believers in Jesus in the 2nd century AD. The town of Comitán dresses up for a party from February 11 to 20 to celebrate the saint, one of the most deep-rooted traditions of the city.
Comitán de Domínguez is a municipality located in the Mexican state of Chiapas, Comitlán which means place of potters, a word that was Hispanicized as Comitán, today it is a thriving municipality characterized by its variety of architectural styles ranging from neoclassical to neo-Gothic and art nouveau and even Mudejar.
