Barra San Simón in Mazatán is located 15 kilometers from Mazatán, where the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Concepción is located. It is a wide beach with lush vegetation, estuaries and a great variety of seabirds. The part facing the open sea has strong waves, while the part facing the estuary has calm waters or a dead sea. It has large areas of mangroves that connect through natural channels with those of the Encrucijada Reserve in the Las Palmas area.
Mazatán is one of the municipalities of the state of Chiapas. Its name comes from the Nahuatl Masatān, which means Place where deer abound. The municipality has the temple of the Virgin of the Conception.
