The Encrucijada in Acapetahua is a series of estuaries that have been a Biosphere Reserve since June 1995. Its importance is based on being one of the points on the migratory route of aquatic birds from Canada and the north of the United States, and their passage to the Atlantic coast. It is characterized by having mangroves up to 35 meters high, considered the highest in the American Pacific.
Acapetahua is one of the municipalities of the Mexican state of Chiapas. Its name comes from the Nahuatl Acatl-Petatl-Hua and is interpreted as Those Who Have Reed Mats. It is one of the main conservation sites for Biodiversity in Mexico, like La Encrucijada, which is a very important species reserve in the region.
In Acapetahua the most important celebrations are those of the Lord of Esquipulas on January 15, La Candelaria on February 2 and San Francisco de Asís on October 4.
