The Tacaná Volcano in Cacahoatán is the highest peak in southeastern Mexico, located between Mexico, in this case partly in the municipality of Cacahoatán, Chiapas and Guatemala. The Tacaná has different types of ecosystems: tall jungle, pine forests in which the beautiful tree ferns stand out, cloud forest and grasslands that give way at the summit to the only high-altitude moorland in Chiapas.

Municipality

The municipality of Cacahoatán is one of the municipalities into which the Mexican state of Chiapas is divided. It is located in the southwest of the state, on the border with Guatemala. Its name comes from the Nahuatl language and its meaning is "place of peanuts or cocoa farmers." Its main tourist attraction is the landscapes that surround the area subject to ecological conservation of the Tacaná Volcano.

Festivities

In Cacahoatán the most important celebrations are those of the Virgin of Candelaria, Saint Faustino, Saint Caralampio, Saint Leonardo, Saint James the Apostle, Saint Cecilia and the Virgin of the Conception.
