The San Ignacio Cave Paintings Museum was opened in November 1994. It occupies the San Ignacio mission, an 18th-century historical monument known as El Teatro. It had multiple uses: a religious settlement, a point of containment against the Chichimecas, and a grain market.
The municipality of Mulegé is one of the five municipalities of the state of Baja California Sur. Its most important cities are Santa Rosalía, Guerrero Negro and Mulegé. It became the main port of the peninsula region due to its economic activities. It has various places to visit such as the Temple of Santa Bárbara and the municipal palace, as well as a great wealth of cave paintings, beaches and places for snorkeling and ecotourism.

During Holy Week, the death of Jesus Christ is reenacted, a tradition that dates back 100 years and was brought to these lands by the Yaqui Indians who arrived in Santa Rosalía with the first copper mines.
