Originally known as Ensenada de Las Palmas, it was built by Father Ignacio María Napolí in 1721. The mission took its name from the Cora, the native people of the region. William C. Massey (1949) interpreted Jesuit historical sources to indicate that the Cora were part of the Guaycura linguistic family, but a reexamination of the evidence seems to indicate that the demonym Cora was a synonym for Pericú (Laylander 1997).
