The Jesuit Eusebio Francisco Kino established the first mission in San Bruno, which is considered the base of the missionary establishments in Baja California. The initial construction was called Real de San Bruno by the Spanish, and its construction was based on the stacking of boxes and sacks of provisions with a roof made of branches. Later, a chapel and a stone fortress were built; from October 25, 1697, with the founding of the Loreto Mission, San Bruno became a visita of the latter.
It is one of the 5 municipalities located in the central part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Its original name is Concho, which in the indigenous language means Red Mangrove and was named Loreto by the Jesuit priest Juan María de Salvatierra in memory of the day that Our Lady of Loreto arrived at the place.
