The Museum of Missions exhibits an important collection of sacred art, which tells of the Jesuit evangelization process in Old California. It is located in a convent built in the 18th century by the religious order of the Jesuits. It houses and exhibits around 300 pieces, including archaeological remains, sacred paintings and sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries, bells, incense burners and ancient documents, such as the Historical Catechism printed in 1681 and the Book of Comments of the Ecclesiastical Council of 1701.
It is one of the 5 municipalities located in the central part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Its original name is Concho, which in the indigenous language means Red Mangrove and was named Loreto by the Jesuit priest Juan María de Salvatierra in memory of the day that Our Lady of Loreto arrived at the place.
