Site of the landing of Father Juan María de Salvatierra, on Saturday, October 19, 1697, the first royal and provisional chapel built by the missionaries on the peninsula; the effigy of the Virgin of Loreto, brought in procession from the Santa Elvira galley, was placed here, declaring the new town of Loreto-Conchó founded on October 25, 1697.
It is one of the 5 municipalities located in the central part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Its original name is Concho, which in the indigenous language means Red Mangrove and was named Loreto by the Jesuit priest Juan María de Salvatierra in memory of the day that Our Lady of Loreto arrived at the place.
