The island is located south of the Gulf of California and is 25 km from the Baja California Peninsula. The Catalan Island is uninhabited, isolated by the sea from the nearest city, Loreto, which is about 60 kilometers away.
It is one of the 5 municipalities located in the central part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Its original name is Concho, which in the indigenous language means Red Mangrove and was named Loreto by the Jesuit priest Juan María de Salvatierra in memory of the day that Our Lady of Loreto arrived at the place.
