The park was declared a protected natural area in July 1996. It is located in the Gulf of California, off the coast of the municipality of Loreto. Its territorial extension includes the islands Coronados, Isla del Carmen, Danzante, Montserrat and Santa Catalina and various islets. You can take a boat tour to visit its islands, or practice various activities such as diving, snorkeling, taking a kayak ride or whale watching (during the season). It is one of the 5 municipalities located in the central part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Its original name is Concho, which in the indigenous language means Red Mangrove and was named Loreto by the Jesuit priest Juan María de Salvatierra in memory of the day that Our Lady of Loreto arrived at the place.
