The island is located 15 km east of the Baja California Peninsula and 37 km southeast of Loreto, the main city of the municipality. The uninhabited island is part of the Loreto Bay National Park, a World Natural Heritage Site.
It is one of the 5 municipalities located in the central part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Its original name is Concho, which in the indigenous language means Red Mangrove and was named Loreto by the Jesuit priest Juan María de Salvatierra in memory of the day that Our Lady of Loreto arrived at the place. It is the favorite destination for cultural and recreational tourism in our country and abroad with cultural and tourist activities and attractions, including beaches, museums and places of interest.
