The Izapa archaeological site is a ceremonial centre founded around 1500 BC and which, from 600 BC onwards, was for a millennium the largest and most important civil and religious centre on the Pacific plain, apparently of Mixe-Zoque origin, but located in contact with the lands occupied by Mayan groups. Its importance was derived from the trade in cacao and probably imported obsidian. Today, the remains appear as mounds of earth and platforms of boulders. Izapa had more than 160 buildings, including pyramids and platforms of up to 20 m.
The municipality of Tuxtla Chico, a municipality in the state of Chiapas in Mexico, is located in the south of the state, on the border with Guatemala and its capital is the town of the same name, Tuxtla, in Nahuatl it means Place of Rabbits. The main tourist attraction is the Izapa Archaeological Zone, one of the main archaeological sites in Chiapas, founded around the year 1500 BC. For 1,000 years it was the largest and most important civil and religious center on the Pacific Plain.
In Tuxtla Chico the most important celebrations are the festivities of the Virgin of Candelaria, the trade fair and the popular fair.
