The Mission was founded on October 25, 1697 by the Jesuit Father Juan María de Salvatierra. It is currently rebuilt and houses the Museum of Missions, where religious objects from the 16th and 17th centuries are exhibited. This mission is considered the mother of all the missions of the Californias, as a just recognition to the bold and enterprising missionary, which is why it is considered the Loreto de Salvatierra.
It is one of the 5 municipalities located in the central part of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Its original name is Concho, which in the indigenous language means Red Mangrove and was named Loreto by the Jesuit priest Juan María de Salvatierra in memory of the day that Our Lady of Loreto arrived at the place. It is the favorite destination for cultural and recreational tourism in our country and abroad with cultural and tourist activities and attractions, including beaches, museums and places of interest.
